CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — Purvelo and Zoom Cycle may be competitors in the Charlottesville fitness scene, but they are working together to make sure they are reopening in a safe way.
“We can make sure that we did not open up for the sake of being first to market, we opened up because as a group, both us and them, decided that it was ethically responsible to do so at this point,” said Justin Goodman, the owner of Zoom Cycle.
Purvelo and Zoom Cycle both offer indoor cycling classes, competing in the Charlottesville area. But Kristin and Peter Watson of Purvelo and Justin and Cara Goodman of Zoom Cycle came together and decided not to open during phase two of the Forward Virginia plan, citing safety as a top priority.
“Wanting to make sure that we did the right thing by our customers, by our staff, and by our community,” Goodman said.
Things will look different when customers return to either studio as each will have fewer than ten bikes.
“At this point, we’re not really doing it to make tons of money, we obviously can’t make tons of money at one-sixth of our normal capacity, we’re doing it right now just to sort of keep our community engaged and give them a place that can be their fitness outlet,” Goodman said.
The owners decided working together would allow for collaboration on best practices, and a safer way through this tough time.
“We felt that it was in our best interest to come together in unity and collectively tackle this for the good for the community,” Kristin Watson said.
The decision allowed both businesses to do what they see is best for the Charlottesville community.
“We sort of took that pressure off the table and that way it allowed us to make an ethical decision and not a business decision,” Goodman said.
Watson agreed. “This isn’t a time that you need to be in competition with anyone,” she said.
